Of a distinctive Iranian design, Sasanian coinage departed in many ways from the Hellenistic model which had dominated "Persian" Coinage since the reign of Alexander III, and represents an exciting and extensive numismatic series.

The influence of Sasanian coinage resonated for centuries after the reign of the last Sasanian monarch; from the thin form of Islamic dirhams to the late Paramara series of Malwa.
