Joe, I've never worried about a little verdigris on the hanks, as long as they operate smoothly. When they get a little sticky, usually you can free them up...
I use Brasso and a toothbrush, being careful not to stain the sail...then after the stuff dries I buff it out with an old rag and a shoe brush Scott...
