Breaking-the-Silence is an independent forum run by the Global AIDS Alliance designed to share information on the Campaign to Stop Global AIDS. The Campaign has the following 3 components:
DONATE THE DOLLARS
The UN estimates that $20 billion USD per year is needed by 2007 to provide a minimum package of prevention, care, orphans programs, impact mitigation interventions, infrastructure development and capacity building to combat HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa each year. As of 2004, only about $6.0 bn of resources from all sources was spent. Donate the Dollars focusses on raising $20 billion per year to prevent HIV transmission, provide care, treatment, and support for people with AIDS, and to respond to the needs of children orphaned by the epidemic.
Global AIDS Alliance intends to ensure that the principles of accountability, participation and transparency are upheld in funding mechanisms, such as the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malari Fund and other scale-up mechanisms.
TREAT THE PEOPLE
At least 95% of people with HIV/AIDS live in economically disadvantaged countries do not have access to treatment for opportunistic infections or access to antiretroviral drugs. GAA is striving to ensure broad access to pharmaceuticals, including generically manufactured drugs, at the lowest possible cost is achieved.
DROP THE DEBT
Many economically-disadvantaged African governments pay more in debt servicing obligations each year that pay on health, education, and HIV/AIDS programs. In partnership with the transnational Jubilee campaigns and other advocacy networks, the GAA will advocate for the rapid acceleration of complete mulitlateral debt cancellation in developing countries heavily affected by HIV/AIDS
