A national discussion for advocates for instant runoff voting, the majority voting system that improves traditional runoff elections by saving money and promoting more positive campaigns and improves plurality elections by ensuring majority winners and accommodating more choices by allowing voters to rank candidates (1, 2, 3).
Most instant runoff voting elections use gradual elimination of weak candidates and recounting ballots until there is a majority winner. An alternate approach is to eliminate all but the top two candidates, just like a runoff election. If your first choice is in the runoff, your ballot counts for that candidate in the second round. If your first choice is eliminated, your ballot counts for your next highest ranked candidate in the runoff. The candidate with the most votes in the second round wins, just like in a runoff election, but without the expense of a second, separate election.
Instant runoff voting eliminates concerns about "wasted votes" and the "lesser evil" dilemma. This inclusive system is used to elect the mayor of London, the president of Ireland, the House of Representatives in Australia, the mayor and board of supervisors of San Francisco, the mayor of Burlington (VT), internal elections in the Utah Republican Party and many student governments. The system is also known as preferential voting and the alternative vote.
