Kooks Anonymous is a surfing club that was founded in 1996 by a group of East Coast USA surfers centered in New York City. The primary means of communication is by email. The name is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the surf slang term "kook" which is often used in a derogatory sense to describe a beginning or incompetent surfer. Kooks Anonymous also refers the need for a support group to help surfers cope with the addictive nature of the sport of surfing ocean waves. There are no dues or organized meetings of any sort and barely any protocols or requirements.
The club has grown over the years from an initial group of five or six friends to include surfers scattered all over the globe. They share travel information and surf forecasts as well as a very large dose of humor on a daily basis. Membership to the so-called "kooks list" is coveted by some surfers because many of the members are local personalities and regional surfing talents. New members are referred to join the list by personal reference only. Each year the founder of Kooks Anonymous presents the "Kook of the Year" award to the member of this international group who had the most outrageous and/or embarrasing surfing related experience in the previous year.
kOOks Anonymous is an international group of surfers of all abilities who discuss surfing conditions on the east coast of the USA and around the world.
